What's Your Signature?

As-salaam alaikum!

Part of feminine nature is a desire to be part of a group, yet remain unique. This is best done by creating a personal signature. A personal signature is something that uniquely represents you. Some women wear the same scent, some women wear or decorate with a favorite color constantly, others have a style all of their own. When you see a certain piece of jewelry or a pair of shoes, you may automatically smile and think, "That looks like something Aunt Lucille would wear". A signature reminds people of you.

So what could your signature be?

Color - What is your favorite color? Find a shade of that color that flatters you, then use it as a predominate feature in your wardrobe, jewelry, accessories, wall color, home decor, or even your car. People will begin to associate you with this color (either one shade or various shades).

Scent - What smells do you like? Citrus? Earthy? Musk? Vanilla? Floral? Tropical? Fruity? Find a fragrance that you like and always buy perfumes, oils, air fresheners, etc. in that type of scent. This doesn't mean you must wear the exact same fragrance all the time. For example, if you love vanilla like I do, buy different perfumes and oils with vanilla as a dominant scent in the formula. This allows you to have variety while keeping that same sweet signature scent. However, if you like smelling the same, it is fine to wear a certain perfume exclusively, just update it every few years to stay up-to-date.

Accessories - What type of accessories do you like? Some women are known for hoop earrings, others wear headwraps, still others like hair ornaments. Think about what you like, then buy a variety of them and wear them frequently.

Style of clothing - Sisters have different preferences that are worked in to their wardrobe. It may be an African symbol, feminine dresses, neosoul or bohemian vibe, a certain type of shoe, a certain type of embellishment, animal print, floral prints, etc. Wearing a long, flowing skirt is a great signature for Muslim women in particular.

Hairstyle - many women are known for their hairstyle. In the 1990's women such as Anita Baker, Halle Berry, and Toni Braxton were all known for their trendy signature cropped hairstyles. There are people who I can recognize from behind because of an afro, unique locs, or a long braid. Although our hair is covered often, you can still use this as a signature at home, or if you wear a drape scarf. Just make sure the hairstyle suits you. Work with a stylist if needed.

Miscellaneous - You might choose to purchase only one type of something. For example, my grandfather only drove Lincoln Town cars for decades. We never had to ask what new car he bought. It was his signature. A signature can be easily accomplished with almost anything that most people purchase randomly. Having one or two things that remain constant, will always consciously or subconsciously represent you to others, becoming part of your character, charm, and mystique.

When choosing a signature, don't overdo it. One or two is plenty. Signatures should make you unique, not boring and overly predictable. Part of femininity is remaining a bit mysterious. Having too many signatures takes away from feminine mystique. Having a signature is really just surrounding yourself with a few of your favorite things. It's a way to nurture and pamper yourself. Have fun with it.

As-salaam alaikum!
